RULES

All games will be played under USYSA rules with CalSouth adjustments for youth competition to include the following additions and clarifications.

REFEREES

2011 and Younger

Games are officiating by licensed referees. The coaches are allowed to step on the field if needed. The coaches are not allowed to intentionally interfere (no handling the ball, blocking running, or passing lanes).

2010 and older

Games are officiating by licensed referees. All referees decisions are final. Once referee makes a call it cannot be overturned.
No challenges to calls are to be made during the game.

GAME FORMAT

2011 and Younger

5v5 (6v6 as directed by League Directors) with mini goals. No goalies. No player may use their hands while the ball is in play.

2010 and older

8v8 with goalies (7v7 or 9v9 as directed by League Directors). Only goalies may use their hands while the ball is in play.

GAME LENGTH

2011 and Younger

Two 22 minute halves (5-minute half time)   

2010 and older

Two 24 minute halves (5-minute half time)

GOAL ARCH

2011 and younger

The purpose of the goal arch is to prevent injuries by reducing the risk of players running into the goal and to prevent players from playing “goalie” and blocking the goal. Players are not allowed to stand inside the arch to defend the goal or wait for the ball. A player may enter the arch in an attempt to kick the ball in the goal or kick the ball out of the goal area.

2010 and older

OUT OF BOUNDS

2011 and Younger

  • Kick-ins from the sides
  • Corner kicks at the corner
  • Goal kicks anywhere on the goal line
  • Goal kicks may not cross the midfield line in the air. If so, re-attempt goal kick

2010 and older

Standard rules – throw in from sides, goal kicks and corner kicks.

BUILD-OUT LINE

2010 and older

Defending players must take position behind the attacking team's build-out line on goal kicks. Defending players can cross the build-out line as soon as the ball enters the field.

SCORING

2011 and younger

  • Goals must be scored from the offensive half of the field
  • Goals shot from the defensive half are not allowed
  • Restarts are done via goal kicks by the defensive team
  • Scores, points, and standings are not kept in 2011 and younger games

2010 and older

HEADERS

2011 and Younger

Deliberate heading is NOT allowed. If a player deliberately heads the ball in a game, an indirect free kick will be awarded to the opposing team from the spot of the offense.

2010 and older

Deliberate heading is NOT allowed in games. If a player deliberately heads the ball in a game, an indirect free kick will be awarded to the opposing team from the spot of the offense. If the deliberate header occurs within the goal area, the indirect free kick should be taken on the goal area line parallel to the goal line at the nearest point to where the infringement occurred. 

Unlike a direct free kick, a goal may not be scored directly from the kick; the ball must first come into contact with another player (from either team). If the ball goes into the goal without touching another player, a goal kick is awarded. 

SUBSTITUTIONS

2011 and younger

Unlimited substitutions allowed. Substitutions should only occur during the stop of play.

2010 and older

Unlimited substitutions allowed. Substitutions will only occur during the stop of play. Coaches must notify and get permission from the referee before substituting.

OFFSIDE & OTHER

2011 and younger

  • No offside
  • Five Yard Rule: In all dead ball situations, defending players must stand at least five yards away from the ball.  If the defensive player’s goal area is closer than five yards, the ball shall be placed five yards from the goal area in line with the place of the penalty.
  • Penalty and Foul Kicks: There are no penalty kicks. All fouls kicks are indirect (must touch another player) except for corner kicks.

2010 and older

  • Offside is called

All Ages

Players, coaches, and parents of each team should be on opposite sides of the field.

The referees’ decisions are final.  No challenges to calls are to be made during the game.

Scores & Standings are not kept.

2010 and older

Scores and points will be kept. Points will be awarded for wins, ties, losses.

TEAM UNIFORMS & EQUIPMENT

All players must wear team shirts, shin guards and cleats during play. Shin guards must be worn under the socks. No portion of the shin guard should show. Cleats should be soccer or turf cleats. For safety reasons, no baseball
and/or metal cleats are allowed.
